PURPOSE AND GOALS
Arkansas is a rural
state. Its many small towns are imperiled by a new global economy
and other challenges too complex for the towns to solve on their
own. Yet, they are told more and more that they will have to be
self-reliant to survive. Local leadership is often cited as the
key to their survival. The ASU REGIONAL LEADERS PROGRAM responds
to this situation. The program will identify, educate,
motivate and effectively network emerging leaders in rural areas
which share a common identity. Aspiring leaders in these areas will
annually have access through this program to the quality training
normally found only in larger cities. The vision: growing networks
of regionally oriented graduates will develop stronger linkages
among small towns, lessening their isolation and significantly improving
the quality of life.
THE PROGRAM
Participants will attend an opening retreat followed by 7-hour sessions
once a month, for eight months in different communities within the
region. A wide variety of highly qualified speakers and panelists
will help the participants develop effective leadership skills and
knowledge in the full gamut of public concerns, including health
and human services, government, regional forces and economic development,
education, and effective functioning on a non-profit board. The
final gathering is a banquet and certification ceremony.
THE PARTICIPANTS
Anyone may apply who aspires to be a leader or a more effective
leader in the region of the state where the program is being offered.
The official
REGIONAL LEADERS
PROGRAM application form must be used. A selection
committee weighs the applications and selects the best-qualified
class representing a cross-section of interests within the region.
Tuition for the program is $600.
THE ORGANIZATION
The University Center for Regional and Community Development
administers the REGIONAL LEADERS PROGRAM, a service program of
Arkansas State University, and a project of the U.S. Economic Development
Administration (EDA). The Center is located at 4110 Lindbergh in
Jonesboro.
THE GRADUATES
Graduates will be expected to join with the 404 other RLP graduates
in offering themselves for service to their community, region and
state. The RLP Alumni Association helps maintain and enhance RLP
networking.
